Measurement and Benchmarking: Create a New Standard

Businesses track metrics to know what is and isn’t working. From quarterly profits to social media engagement, the modern organization uses all sorts of data to measure its progress on key performance indicators. Data supports informed decision making and shows return on investment for each initiative. So, why should diversity and inclusion be any different?

To determine the success of any new EDI&B initiative, you first need to know your starting point and your goal. Establishing a benchmark tells an organization where it is starting from. Ongoing measurement shows whether its goals are being met.

On EDI&B, companies might track employment equity numbers, such as how many people from each designated group they employ. Some organizations break those numbers down by employment type to identify gaps. For example, a company might find that while their team is gender balanced, all administrative roles are filled by women and all leadership roles by men. Certain organizations track inclusion through employee satisfaction surveys. No matter what they measure, they can analyze the data to course correct or double down on initiatives that seem to be working well.

The resources below will help support your team in measuring and benchmarking for EDI&B in your workplace.
